From a Broken $10,000 Light System to "The Chacer": How We Fixed Dental Office Communication

How a fried $10,000 hard-wired light system led two dentists to build The Chacer — a modern, wireless, tablet-based paging app now used for over a decade.

In the Beginning

In 2013, our practice was preparing for a massive upgrade. We purchased a larger, 10-operatory practice, and began mapping out our big move scheduled for 2015. But as we planned the layout, we ran right into a major hurdle that every growing practice faces: the chaos of room-to-room communication.

At the time, we were using a traditional hard-wired communicator light system to page doctors to specific chairs. On paper, it worked. In reality, it was a daily bottleneck.

Because the system could only display one call at a time, our team had to stand there, staring at a wall panel, waiting for it to slowly flip between pages just to see who was needed. Most of the time, the flashing light wasn't even for you.

Then, the unthinkable happened. The main circuit board fried. Total silence.

The $10,000 Wake-Up Call

As we prepared for our upcoming move to the 10-operatory space, we looked into what it would take to scale up that hard-wired system. The quotes we received were shocking. To purchase the equipment and run miles of new wires through the walls of our future office was going to cost tens of thousands of dollars.

We refused to spend a fortune on outdated technology that barely solved our problem in the first place. There had to be a modern, wireless, digital solution.

When we couldn't find one, we built it.

Enter: The Chacer App (2014)

In 2014—a full year before our big move—the very first version of The Chacer App was born. We built it to ensure that when we finally stepped into our new 10-operatory office in 2015, we would have a communication system that could actually handle the scale. No expensive construction, no drywall damage, and no endless wiring. Just an intuitive software solution running cleanly on tablets.

Here is exactly what we wrote about the system back in 2014 during our first year of testing and using it:

"We never realized the lack of information we were getting from our old communication system. What we had was a bunch of lights that scrolled through messages, slowly, with no indication of priority. Now, with The Chacer, we have the ability to coordinate and prioritize what has historically been one of the more chaotic portions of the doctor's day. With a glance at the tablet we immediately know who needs us and how long they have been waiting. It has been a huge timesaver and really kept our day on schedule. We are so happy with a modern system to keep up with a modern and busy office."

Made by Dentists, Proven for Over a Decade

For the last 12 years, we didn't just sell Chacer—we lived it. We ran it daily in our own busy clinic, putting it through over a decade of real-world, high-volume testing. We continuously updated it, refined the interface, and stripped away the friction.

Today, we are incredibly proud to launch the newest, most powerful version of The Chacer App—and this time, we are making it available to every dental practice in the country.

If you are tired of:

  • Frustratingly slow blinking light panels
  • Staring at walls waiting for messages to scroll past
  • Expensive installation bills in the tens of thousands of dollars

It is time to ditch the wires. The Chacer gives your team instant, prioritized room data with a single glance at a tablet, keeping your day on schedule and your doctors exactly where they need to be.
